With a newly booked trip up to New England (home!) on the horizon, my fall excitement is at an all time high. Apple crisp, bright foliage, pumpkin bread, hay rides - you name it and I am all about it. After nearly ten years living in New England there's just something about fresh fall air that gets me re inspired and ready to conquer the world, anyone else?

With my new inspiration I've been working on some fun posts that will be coming out over the next few weeks! First up is my fall bucket list - New York City style! One of my most read posts was last year's Non-Touristy NYC Christmas Bucket List, so I thought I'd bring it back for a new season.

1) Fall Foliage from Belvedere Castle

Central Park Foliage is definitely a tourist favorite, but there is a somewhat unknown spot in the park that you must visit during the fall - Belvedere Castle. I'm all about the NYC skyline views, but the view over Central Park in the fall might just be better!

2) Cider Donuts at the Union Square Farmers' Market

I love the Union Square Farmers' market year-round, but it's especially amazing in the fall! Vendors bring cider donuts, pumpkin bread, fresh picked apples, and more delicious treats into the city for all of us who miss home cooking and fresh air. I like to pick up some donuts and a cup of hot cider and find a table in the park!

3) Picnic By The Cloisters

I've only been to The Cloisters once, but I am dying to go back in the fall. The grounds of The Cloisters are absolutely beautiful and it's a great place to head in the city to get some fresh air (without leaving the city!) Major bonus - you can spend as much time as you want inside The Cloisters, so if you're going solo bring a book and find a pretty spot spend the afternoon! If you're going with friends bring a picnic blanket and lunch and set up everything in the park right by the museum.

4) Brunch at Friend of a Farmer and Explore Brooklyn Heights

Brunch is a year round thing in NYC, but Friend of a Farmer is my fall spot, mostly because they serve cornbread with apple compote with brunch as your free bread basket situation Amazing, right? The menu only gets better from there, including pumpkin pancakes and apple smoked bacon. The Brooklyn Heights location is in th

5) Leave NYC for a day at Storm King Art Center

Ok so this bucket list item isn't technically within city limits, but I feel like a trip to the Storm King Art Center is a trip every New Yorker is dying to do! If you watch Master of None you'll automatically recognize the expansive park and art exhibit. The exhibit closes for the season at the end of October, so if you want to go make your plans now!

6) Try out a Cider Restaurant in the city

Cider is definitely my fall drink of choice, so when I heard there are restaurants devoted to the drink all I could think was, where have I been? The first spot I want to try out is Wassail in the Lower East Side. Their Cider Flight looks to be right up my alley!

7) Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade

For my New York friends this parade is a tradition that hopefully we'll never let die. The dog parade has become pretty popular in the last few years, so it's a bit crowded, but still so worth it. Make sure your phone is fully charged because you're going to want to take pictures of literally everything there! If you can muster up some early morning motivation show up early and grab a bagel from Tompkins Square Bagels - to be extra fall get a French Toast bagel with Apple Cinnamon Cream Cheese

I can't believe in just two weeks the summer will be over. Even though it stays warm until the end of September here in New York, there's something about those few last weeks of August that makes me want to spend every possible minute outside exploring the city.

Every summer we begin to take the long afternoons outside in Central Park, the sunset drinks by the water, and even just the ease of gorgeous walks from the subway to work every morning. Too soon we'll all be trudging through snow piles trying to navigate slush puddles. Instead of just concentrating on the looming winter (speaking of which, wasn't Game of Thrones CRAZY last night?!) I decided to try and make the most of these last few weeks and check off as many items from my last minute bucket list as possible.

1) One Last Beach Day - I've only spent two days at the beach this summer, so I'm trying to rally friends together to get one last beach day on the calendar. If you're stuck in the city heading out to the Rockaways or Long Beach is the perfect day trip.

2) Brooklyn Barge Afternoon - This weekend I headed out to Greenpoint with a friend, spent the night at Brooklyn Barge, and ended up having the best time! It's a huge outdoor bar with games (think corn hole and giant jenga) and a gorgeous view of the NYC skyline. Before it closes for the winter I definitely want to go back for a Saturday afternoon!
3) Lunch in Bryant Park - Bryant Park is the absolute best place for lunch during the work week. Throughout the summer they have events happening at lunch like 'Broadway in Bryant Park' on Thursday (which unfortunately ended earlier this summer), but everything ends with the start of September so I have to take advantage of it now!

4) Happy Hour at Grand Banks - Grand Banks is probably the most instagrammable spot in the city during the summer. It's a gorgeous old ship turned bougie oyster bar and it's the perfect spot for a picturesque happy hour with friends. I've still never been and am dying to go before the end of the summer!

5) Heading out to Governors Island - When you can't leave the city Governors Island is the perfect escape for a day! Last summer I took the 10 minute ferry over to the island multiple times, but haven't been on out once this summer! I'm dying to spend a day riding bikes around the park and having a delicious lunch from the food trucks.

End of Summer Bucket List

Back in September my friends all surprised me for my birthday with tickets to go to the One World Observatory and let me tell you it was one of the best gifts I've ever received. I didn't get to book my visit until late December and I ended up making it part of a sort of 'treat yourself' day after I finished finals.

I've been to the Top of the Rock a few times (see photos here and here), so I wasn't expecting this experience to be much different, but boy was I wrong. Every moment of your time at the observatory is a magical experience, starting with the elevator ride that shows a time lapse video of the history of New York City. We lucked out with a very clear day, so you could see not only all of Manhattan, but also the other boroughs, New Jersey, and the Statue of Liberty. It felt so special to be looking down on the NYU campus (look for the Washington Square Park arch in my photos below!) and I was even able to find the roof of my apartment building.

To really take in the view and experience everything the observatory has to offer I highly suggest getting a drink at the bar. While definitely a bit pricey it was the perfect way to extend our time at the observatory in a spot where there weren't ridiculous crowds or screaming kids.

Of course, I also had to take the typical shot sitting by the windows looking out at the city. The observatory doesn't make it easy though. They've put little metal city skylines on the edges, which are quite literally a pain in your butt. Definitely one of those 'do it for the gram' moments 😜.

It's widely known that the most wonderful time of the year is even more wonderful in New York City. This city is truly magical around the holiday season with trees lining the sidewalks and lights criss crossing the streets. Last year I made this holiday bucket list for NYC and actually checked off most of the items. If you've never been to New York around the holidays the big tourist activities are seriously a must-do. There's nothing like seeing the Rockefeller tree or the windows down 5th Avenue for the first time.

However when you live in NYC, sometimes it is just so damn frustrating when every holiday activity is a push your way through hoards of people kind of event (aka anything in Bryant Park, Rockefeller, etc). So this year I've spent hours searching to find some of the best unknown (or at least less known) holiday activities around the city. Seriously, start making time in your calendar right now because these events are perfect for those of us who have been to the Union SQ Christmas Market so many times we can navigate it with our eyes closed.

Ok I freaked out when I found out there's a holiday show at the botanical gardens. This will be the 25th year of their Holiday Train Show in which a model train runs through over 150 recreated landmarks. The event opens on November 19th and runs through mid January, and they suggest making reservations ahead of time. Also, for those of us of age there are Bar Cart nights with ice carving demonstrations, live music, and plenty of holiday drinks :)

When sidewalk Christmas trees just aren't doing it for you anymore head out to Queens for a real Christmas Tree Farm experience. Starting December 1st you'll be able to wander through their tree selection with hot chocolate. Plus, the farm is 47 acres so you'll get some much needed fresh air and can even hang out with their animals. Sign me up!

Just do a quick Google Image search for the Dyker Heights Lights and you'll see why I'm already planning my trip out to Brooklyn. An entire neighborhood sets up crazy Christmas lights to get you in the holiday spirit. All the info I found suggested going in mid-December between dusk and 9pm to get the best experience of the lights. There are guided bus tours though they seem to be crazy expensive, so I'd follow this guide to seeing the lights on foot.

When you finally gotten bored of all the famous holiday markets in Manhattan, head out to Williamsburg for the Bulletin Holiday Market. It's a new market, but from what I've read it's sure to impress and it's only open for 2 weekends ( December 3-4th & 10-11th) so start planning your trip now. The real selling factor for this market - there's a DJ and dance room with a full bar and serious holiday decorations, meaning you're guaranteed to have an amazing time. Also, the spiked hot cocoa is calling me.

On December 17th hundreds of people will gather in Washington Square Park at ___ PM to play Phil Kline's Unsilent Night composition together as they walk through the East Village. The event has been happening for decades and honestly looks like such an interesting holiday experience. The event started in Washington Square in 1992 and now happens in cities all around the world throughout the month of December, pretty cool right? If you're interested you can read more here.

Honestly, holiday markets are the best part of the winter... so I needed to include a few :) This holiday market is only open for the weekend of December 3-4th, but is rumored to have the best gifts you'll find throughout the season.

If you end up going to any of these events let me know :) I'd love to hear about your experience and with any luck I'll find a time to go to each of them!

Non-Tourisy Christmas Activites in NYC

Life's been a bit crazy lately, so When & Wear has definitely been taking a back seat to school and work. However, as I start to get a handle on my fall schedule I wanted to share what I've been up to with all of you lately. I'm always posting on Instagram, so if you want live updates make sure to follow along there :)

NYC has not been letting up on this summer heat, which means I've been living in my favorite pair of shorts from Banana Republic. They honestly go with everything and while I don't like to admit it, I wear them probably three times a week. Unfortunately, they're from last season, but this pair on sale will do just the trick in these last couple weeks of summer.

You know I love my tacos... and while mexican food in NYC is apparently not nearly as great as what you'll find in California (or so I'm told), Tacombi is the perfect place to celebrate the weekend with friends. My favorite is definitely the crispy fish taco, and if you couldn't tell from the image above, the guac is to die for!

If you follow me on Instagram then you'll know I started an internship at rewardStyle last week! It's been AMAZING so far (and yes the caps are necessary). My team is pretty amazing and I started just in time for NYFW, so I got to meet a bunch of people who work out of the Dallas headquarters who were in town for the LTLxMilkMakeup party!

While most of my time is spent in class, studying, or at work I was able to escape to Roosevelt Island for a few hours last weekend. This spot is definitely not well known to tourists, but is most definitely worth a trip. You just jump on the tram, which will give you amazing views of the skyline from above. Then once you reach the little island the views of Manhattan are even better and the crazy city crowds are gone. I will have to take another trip once the leaves start to turn, because I can't even imagine how gorgeous it will be then!

September in NYC

Happy hump day everyone! Things are a bit crazy in work and life this week as I prepare for the long weekend, but I wanted to share these photos from the weekend.  My friend suggested we head over to Dumbo for the evening, and boy was I glad he convinced me to leave Manhattan for the night. The sunset over the skyline was just gorgeous and the way the light hit the carousel pretty much blew me away.

You may be thinking, wow Caroline only wears that new romper she put up on the blog last week, and while that is actually very true, this look is actually two separate pieces that are both oldies but goodies. I wore both this top and the shorts a lot last summer, but they're just too easy not to throw on for an evening of exploring. I've linked to a few of my favorite similar options below!

Happy hump day everyone :) I'm officially in summer mode since I turned in my last final at the end of last week. While I'm working a lot of hours at my admissions ambassador job this week, it still just feels amazing to get out at 5pm to sunny skies and no huge to-dos looming over my head.

With all this free time I've been hopping between museums, parks, and ah-mazing taco spots. The weather has been a bit chilly, but that hasn't stopped me from spending all the time I can outside since once work starts in June I'll be indoors most of the time.

After realizing we were starving, my friend Cheyenne and I stopped by B.Bar's taco bar, which I had no idea even existed until then. I will say, they aren't my favorite tacos in the city slash the NYU area, but they were pretty good and the set up is too cute not to photograph. If you're in the area looking for amazing tacos I'd suggest Dorado Tacos (my personal fave) or Otto's Tacos. All my Californian friends tell me it's impossible to find good mexican in the city, but I have to disagree when it comes to these taco spots. There's truly nothing better than a sunny afternoon with a fish taco!

I feel like New York gets stuck in that transitional spring period f.o.r.e.v.e.r.... Those days when it's a little too cold or rainy for a dress, but you don't really need a jacket. Do you guys know what I mean? That's probably the number one reason why I've never been a huge spring person (fall all the way). I get so sick of the repetitive semi dreary days.

However, this year things have been a little different because as my friends describe it I've become Queen of the Vests. I rotate between two vests (the one in this post and this one from this post last week) all the time, and funny enough I bought them last summer on the same day. Weird how that happens sometimes, right? These vests have been my go-to for everything because they act as a pretty effective layering piece while still feeling summery. I also love the way they can elevate any basic jeans and a blouse look to a fully put together outfit. Plus, then when less gloomy days finally arrive you revert back to wearing them over sundresses which is hands down my favorite way :)

Unfortunatelty, the vest that I'm wearing is no longer available, but I've linked to a few others I love at the bottom of the post! I've also put together another small collection of my favorites from the Shopbop sale thats going on until Thursday. Select (really really cute) styles are 40% off, so don't miss out!

These are all my favorites from the Shopbop sale for under $100! The amount of things I wanted was honestly overwhelming...

Honestly, this weekend was one for the books and I'm still trying to get myself back into study mode because I'd rather be going back to the weekend. All the fun started Saturday as I attended and spoke at Lovely Happenings spring event.

I had the chance to speak on a fashion panel along with Allie, Melanie, Mollie, and Christine and while I was definitely nervous beforehand it ended up being so much fun! We talked about everything from our obsession with tassels and off the shoulder pieces to our favorite spots in the city (thats how I learned about the mini golf spot I went to the next day). It was a surprise to both myself and Dana that I didn't wearing black or talk about my leather jacket obsession the whole time. Instead I touched on a few of my go-to investment pieces such as a good pair of denim and my favorite fall jacket (it's one of those pieces I wear all.the.time., but you never see on the blog). Each of the other girls had great ideas for how to transition looks from day to night (throw a blazer over a semi-scandalous top) and the best spots to eat in the city. Now I'm dying to try out Rosie's in the East Village!

After the panel I spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the other booths at the event! A few of my favorites were Bitches Be Gluten Free, Melanie's homemade face scrubs, and Lexicon of Style's beautiful scarves! Between snapping photos, snacking on some delicious sweets, and meeting plenty of new people, the day was just such an amazing refresh. I've definitely been in a bit of a blogging funk (I'm sure most of you feel me) and a day with other bloggers and creatives was just what I needed!

A huge thank you to Rachael and Jaclyn of Lovely Happenings for having me and also to my always amazing roomie and BFF Alice who tagged along to be my photographer (isn't she just amazing?!).

P.S. I can't even tell you how much I love that hilariously basic pictures of us bloggers snapchatting our drinks!

I'm obsessed with all the lace on Allie and Dana's dresses!

The Perfect Girl's Day

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Happy Monday everyone! This weekend was a pretty great one that I wish could have held on a little longer. It was NYU's Weekend on the Square (WoTS), which is our largest admitted students weekend. I went as a senior in high school and this weekend was the third time I've worked it as student admissions ambassador. WoTS is the kind of weekend that brings back all those emotions from senior year of high school, and I love getting to welcome the new class of students! I just can't believe that they'll be graduating in 2020. It weirdly makes me feel old...

After working all weekend, as fun as it is, I was in need a bit of a treat. Instead of spending the entire evening inside doing homework, I convinced one of my roommates into getting tacos with me. We tried out a new-to-us place called Lupe's on 6th Ave. Not only was the decor adorable, but my fish tacos were delicious and everything was under $15 - suffice it to say, we will be going back very soon.

Getting to sit outside with a delicious dinner as the sun was setting was truly the perfect end to the weekend. It reminded me that those magical summer nights in NYC that everyone loves so much are just around the corner. So as much as I'm not exactly prepared for this week, this weekend left me feeling all sorts of good things :)

Also, for those of you in the New York area, don't forget that this Saturday is the next Lovely Happenings event! I'll be speaking on the fashion panel, and I couldn't be more excited. I've given a few more details in my sidebar, but you can also learn more and buy tickets here.

PS I'm still so in love with these Steve Madden sandals! Every time the weather is warm enough I pull them out because they are just so cute and go with everything! And really, who doesn't love tassels? Check out Steve Madden's coupon page here.
