Last week I headed into Boston to meet up with Ingrid from Smilingrid. We met at the Her Campus Conference in NYC a couple of weeks ago and knew we needed to become blogger buds after realizing we both lived around Boston. After a delicious dinner at Cheesecake Factory (we knew we were a perfect match after we bonded over our love of the mac & cheese balls. If you haven't tried them you must) we went for a walk to make the most of the beautiful weather. Sadly, it was a little dark so our pictures kept coming out a little blurry.

I found this skirt on the same trip to NYC where I met Ingrid so it was fitting that I wore it to dinner. I was immediately drawn to the tulip cut and fun knot in the front. While this probably isn't the most flattering skirt I've ever owned it is definitely the most fun (and that's what matters, right?). It does wrinkle quickly though, which always kills me. Paired with my favorite new sandals and a striped crop top the outfit was perfect for the ridiculously hot weather we've been having in Boston.

Do you guys have any blogger buds around where you live? If you live around Boston (or NYC during the school year) I would love to meet up!

I'm in serious vacation mode right now...

Since Friday my family (as well as many family friends) have been up in Lake Placid for some relaxation and lake time. We've had pretty nice weather so far so I've been reading on the beach (The One & Only is so good) and going for swims off the dock. The wi-fi and cell phone signal is pretty non-existent up here so I've barely been on my phone (don't worry there are still plenty of insta updates) and have instead been soaking up the sun.

I'll be here until Thursday and planning on doing more relaxing than blogging, but I'll be back full time next week!

I've been counting down the days to my vacation for weeks and it is almost here. Tomorrow my family will be packing up the car (puppy included) and heading to upstate New York for a week by the lake with family friends. It's a trip we've been taking for years and every time we go back my excitement is even greater.

As far as vacations go this is probably the most low key, and I couldn't be more ready for some lazy days. Going from bed to lake to hammock to dinner and then repeating the same schedule the next day calls for easy pieces like chambrays, white denim shorts, and slip on sandals that can easily go from a coverup to a dinner outfit.

While I'm all for hot and humid summer weather the temperatures are only ever in the mid 70s with much chillier temps at night. Of course this makes it completely acceptable (and necessary) to start up a campfire and roast a couple marshmallows. I also make sure to pack a few warm sweaters and long sleeve (aka so many stripes) for the nights spent outside to protect against the cold and any lurking mosquitos.

I already have The One & Only by Emily Giffin on my reading list for the week (as well as Lucky and Elle), but if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them! I know I'm going to blow through the first book and magazines quickly.

{J.Crew tee, American Eagle jeans, Timex watch}

While I feel like most of my style inspiration comes from living and going to school in NYC I was raised in three places that are all about preppy and nautical style. Starting on the North Carolina coast, where Lilly is a way of life for some people, to my current home in Massachusetts it's been all about bright colors and stripes. These preppy and nautical parts of myself come out the most in the summertime.

I'm a sucker for a pair of white jeans and a striped top (with bare feet no less) for a summer afternoon party. While I'd usually add a few accessories or a pair of fun shoes to switch up this look it felt just right going back to basics (and none of my shoes fit thanks to my swollen ankle). Of course by wearing white I was just setting myself up for some kind of spill. As I've said before, thank God for stain remover spray or else I'd have no clothes left (fyi steak juice is the worst).

I've heard from a lot of you that you love when I share parts of my life in New York.
While I'm not living in the city this summer I thought I would share a few of my old and new favorite spots. First on the list are a few of the places I visited this past weekend. I always make a point to try new places since there will always be somewhere that looks good that I haven't tried yet, but then there are the few spots I always have to go back to.

This is a new favorite of mine! After getting caught in a rainstorm in the West Village (and a recommendation from Amy Stone) my friend and I ran into the adorable coffee spot. The staff were seriously the sweetest and the blue/green hues throughout were beautiful. We both ordered Aussie Iced Coffees and sucked them down in no time. If you've never had an Aussie iced coffee, it is chilled espresso topped with ice cream, and man is it good.

Chobani is an old favorite of mine and anytime I'm shopping in SoHo I stop by. If you are a greek yogurt lover you will be just as obsessed with this spot as I am. I love to get the Mango Avocado dish and sit by the window to people watch. While you inhale your yogurt you'll also add at least a dozen things to your must-buy list.

I love brunch and I love trying new brunch places, but I might just have to keep going back to Hotel Chantelle. This is the perfect summer brunch spot on the roof of a LES building. Make sure to bring sunglasses. I ordered the lobster eggs benedict which were delicious, but the real star of the meal was the truffle oil tater tots. My friend and I couldn't stop eating them, even after we were beyond full. The perfect backdrop to our catching up and eating was the jazz band playing by the bar.

Morgenstern's Finest Ice Cream
I have a serious ice cream problem that I have no plans to work on, especially now that I've found Morgenstern's. Not only is it so cute inside with the cobalt blue and white theme, but there are delicious unique ice cream flavors and sundaes. I've heard incredible things about their banana split, but since it was pretty busy when I stopped by I ended up getting a cone with raspberry currant and mango sorbet (which I quickly inhaled). I'm telling you all you must must must go here and please try the banana split for me!

I'm thinking about sharing a few more posts of my favorite spots in New York and I would love to know what types of things you all want to know more about. You can check out more of my New York City posts under the Life in NYC tab at the top of the page.

Hope you have a happy Monday!

Christmas and Thanksgiving are my favorite holidays, but after that comes the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I'm kidding of course, but as someone who has a shopping addiction I wait for the summer #NSALE every year and actually end up counting down the days until I can go shopping.

I was planning on running over to Nordstrom as soon as I got out of work on Friday, but an unfortunate trampoline incident (babysitting is the best job) lead to a very swollen ankle so I found myself parked on the couch scrolling through pages of the glorious sale instead of actually wandering around Nordstrom. I've already purchased these boots that I tried on during early access, but I have plenty more on my list that I thought I would share with you all.

As I've said before I love NSale because it is the perfect time to invest in classic pieces (ok and maybe splurge on a much loved trend). So I've collected a bunch of my favorites under $80 (and most of the pieces are less than $65) that you won't want to get rid of anytime soon. Of course this means there is plenty of leather, classic prints, dainty jewelry, and oh yeah black. I kind of assumed I'd be over the whole all leather all the time phase by now, but it's just gotten worse so the NSale is the perfect time to invest in nicer pieces!

Happy shopping to you all! The sale ends August 4th so make sure it hit order on those must have pieces before then and if you have any favorite pieces please share them with me (I can always shop more :)).

Yay for the weekend! I have exactly one more week until a nice and long vacation in up state New York followed by my cousins wedding. Long weekends are a good break from work during the summertime, but a real week long vaca is definitely a must-do for me at some point during the summer. I'll be packing lots of books and magazines so that I can catch up on reading (and also maybe get ahead on some blogging!). If you have any suggestions on books please let me know because I'm stuck on what to read next!

And now a few of my favorite things this week...

Orphan Black is my new favorite show. I've watched all of season one and part of season two already (there are only ten episodes a season) and I seriously cannot stop watching it. The first season is free on Amazon instant video with Amazon Prime.

Hallie shared a recap of the blogger panel at last weekend's Her Campus Conference and as per usual her post is hilarious but also has some incredible advice (both for style and blogging!).

While I'm not exactly self employed I do work on a lot of independent projects (for both my internship and blog) so these tips from Stephanie Sterjovski are incredibly helpful.

Primark is planning on opening it's first US store in Boston and I couldn't be more excited (even though it's more than a year away). I'm always jealous of the UK bloggers who shop there.

I hope you all have a great weekend! I'll be back Monday with a little guide of my favorite NYC spots!

Happy Friday + Links

If you follow me on twitter you know that this past Saturday I spent the day up at Columbia for the Her Campus Intercollegiate Conference. I've been a part of the Her Campus Blogger Network for over a year but it was my first time attending the conference and I can tell you I'll definitely be back next year.

My day started earlier than anyone's Saturday should ever start as I had a 45 minute commute from SoHo up to Columbia (note the completely empty broadway shot above). While I was running a bit behind schedule I took a quick shoe selfie, which ended up being the only real outfit picture I got all day. I really had no idea what was I supposed to wear to a conference like this, but I settled on this H&M blouse, Zara skirt, and my absurdly comfortable Express ankle boots. Of course I quickly realized that I'm probably the only college girl who wears all black and white in the summer, but I guess that's what happens when you try to stay in one color scheme for packing.

The morning started with a keynote from Carley Roney, Co-Founder of The Knot (now XO Group), who was incredibly inspirational. Hands down her best piece of advice was that if you accept that perfection isn't reality you will open yourself up to doing more and find yourself asking why you can't be the one to do something. If you want to know more about Carley this interview with her and her co-founder husband is great!

The best part of the conference for me was the panel about how top bloggers had found their niche. The panel featured Hallie Wilson from corals + cognacs, Jessica Sturdy from Bows & Sequins, Carly Heitlinger from The College Prepster, and Mackenzie Horan from Design Darling. As someone who writes a blog (duh) and is interested in digital marketing I was scribbling down notes the whole time (and just dying with excitement because as someone next to me said, these bloggers are our equivalent of celebrities). While it may seem obvious one of the bloggers pointed out that we need to treat social media like a conversation. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other platforms are meant to promote interaction between people and we need to be on both sides of the conversations (aka don't feel weird responding to people's tweets or commenting on their instagrams).

After the panel I got the chance to talk to Hallie for a little while! While we had emailed a little bit (read my interview with her here) it was pretty amazing getting to meet her in person. She is definitely someone I look up to in the blogosphere (and in real life) so talking about her experiences since starting corals + cognacs was incredibly inspirational.

I could go on for at least three more paragraphs about all the other amazing things about the conference (including the unbelivable swag bags and delicious chipotle lunch), but what I really left the day with was a new excitement for blogging. Between meeting a few of my idols and making some new blogging friends (check out Ingrid's blog Smilingrid) I've never been happier to be apart of this community.

{Ro & De blouse, via Nordstrom Rack J.Crew chambray, Forever 21 skirt, Steve Madden sandals, Old Navy sunglasses}

Hey all! I'm back to reality today after arriving home from my short visit to NYC last night. The trip was a whirlwind (I was only there for 66 hours and one day was spent at the Her Campus Conference) so when I got home last night I was ready to crash.

I'm going completely out of order with pictures from the weekend, but I thought I'd start out with a little outfit post. I tried to pack really light and kind of failed so I basically wore variations of the same outfit all four days (I didn't do well with the whole mix and match thing). Of course my most worn items were my leather skirt and chambray top. You all know how much I love this skirt and the chambray added the perfect layer for slightly cooler mornings/nights and incase of rain.

These pictures were taken Sunday when my friend and I ventured way uptown to The Met to see the Charles James exhibit  (which was incredible) and the view from the roof! All spring I wanted to visit The Met rooftop, but always ended up being busy on the beautiful days. Even though the day started off cloudy we lucked out as a little blue broke through while we were up there. I definitely recommend heading up to the roof next time you're at The Met, but make sure to hold on to your hats and scarves, because even my sunglasses almost blew off my head a couple times.

I'll be posting more pictures of my trip throughout the week so make sure to check back to hear about the Her Campus Conference and the million different places I ate!

We're finally back to my favorite feature on Peachy Keen! In the last couple years I've come across a few women who I've really begun to admire through blogs I read, articles I've found, and instagram accounts I follow. One of these women is Amy Stone, who works on the digital marketing/social media team at Gap (as well as Hallie Wilson, read my interview with her here). Not only does she have an incredible instagram account (I may or may not check it multiple times a day waiting for new picture), but she shares even more beautiful pictures on her personal blog. If you love pretty clothing and accessories, delicious food, or beautiful destinations Amy's blog is for you.

With a quick scroll through her pictures it's easy to tell she loves the color blue, stripes, hydrangeas, and cute coffee shops. However, since I'm studying marketing I was dying to know a little bit more about her job and the behind the scenes parts of her blog and instagram. So of course in my emails with Amy I had to ask her a few questions about how she got to where she is today (fyi if I had to pick a dream job it would probably be hers).

Does your day-to-day schedule work schedule change all the time or stay pretty consistent?
It depends on the week! My work schedule is generally consistent Monday-Friday. However, something fun couple pop up on my calendar such as a photoshoot or press preview. Coffee dates and meetings are peppered in on a routine basis. I'm lucky to work at a great company with stellar coworkers who share the same passions and interests as I do, so nothing ever feels like true "work".

Outside of going to school for marketing or advertising what are some things that a student can do to prepare themselves for a career in digital marketing?
I believe a combination of both relevant, dynamic internships and personal projects is the key to preparing for a career in social media. For instance, I began a blog (and the social media components to go along with it) back in 2008 while in college. Once I graduated I interned at various fashion publications, organizations, agencies, and designers. My photography and blogging knowledge that I had built on my own was highly valued when interviewing for these internships. Paired with the experience I gained at these (unpaid) roles, I eventually found my dream job - managing social media at a well-loved, well-known brand.

What would your biggest piece of advice be for someone trying to build a brand through social media, whether for themselves or their business?
Number one -- know your perspective and point of view along with who would want to attract as followers/readers. Creating these filters will make it effortless to create content. Number two -- develop a strong brand voice and visual style. The digital marketplace is deeply saturated and repetitive, but doing something unique and building original content in an engaging way will stand out. I've used these guidelines to create my own personal brand.

What is your favorite undiscovered spot in New York for those of us who have just moved to the city?
I love well-styled coffee spots and unique flower shops. A few week ago, I discovered Bluestone Lane Coffee has opened a West Village outpost -- it's picture perfect. I also love Happy Bones for their tortoise coffee spoons. For floral euphoria, SPINA, a beautiful curated floral studio, just opened in Greenwich Village. I try to make a habit of exploring new neighborhoods (solo or with a friend) and always jot down new places.

Do you have a favorite summer piece from Gap right now?
Yes! I bought a few Gap pieces that I can't get enough of. These tonal colorblock shorts in blue have been my weekday staple. Additionally, this oxford shift dress is in heavy rotation for brunches or casual cocktails. Another great piece is this white halter dress -- a chic, reasonably priced alternative to the rag & bone dress I purchased earlier this season.

If you're like me you're a little lot more in love with Amy after reading her answers. She definitely inspires me to work hard on improving my social media and branding skills. Oh, and she's helped add a few spots to my NYC Must-Visit list.

If you didn't immediately click to Amy's blog and instagram after seeing the pictures above make sure to check them out! Thanks so much to Amy for answering my questions!

{Gap sweater (similar), Zara dress (similar & more options), Bauble Bar bracelet, Madden Girl sandals}

Happy Hump Day! I'm especially excited for this weekend since I will be heading down to NYC on Friday for the Her Campus Conference and some much needed time with a friend from NYU. Brunch at Hotel Chantelle and coffee at Happy Bones (my friend lives right next door! So jealous) are already on the schedule. I'm actually counting down the hours until I arrive in the city (I'll be there at 6pm on Friday!).

On another note (more related to the actual post...) this look is from the Fourth of July. I focused a lot on the blue and the white, but while you can barely see it in the pictures I had bright red nails and toenails! The weather was pretty freakin' horrible thanks to Hurricane Arthur, so I layered up and made sure to spray a lot of humidity controlling hairspray (which didn't actual work so well). Luckily, as you could see in my last post the weather got so much nicer over the weekend that we weren't too sad about the storm.

Hope you're all surviving the week and have something to look forward to this weekend. I've been loving hanging with my new puppy and I promise I'll post more about her soon!

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

The Monday after a long weekend is always a hard one, and while getting out of bed this morning was especially hard as soon as I remembered that my family is picking up our puppy today I was up and in the shower.

Fourth of July was completely rained out around Boston, but luckily my beach day was planned for later on in the weekend. Yesterday my family headed down the Cape to spend the day with extended family (some I hadn't seen in 5 years). It was incredible to see my cousins all together with their adorable little children. We spent the day on my Uncle's boat, sitting at the beach, and as always eating some delicious food (starting with homemade guac at home and finishing with lobster rolls, yum!). It is also the perfect time to visit the Cape since all the hydrangeas are blooming. The obsession people have with peonies is how I feel about hydrangeas, so when I spotted the beautiful blue ones I had to snap a picture.

How was all the holiday weekend for you all? I hope it was less rainy than mine!

Happy Independence Day! Sadly it is supposed to thunderstorm and rain here all day so I'll be hanging inside with friends (marathon movie watching...). Luckily when I head down to the cape later this weekend the weather is supposed to be beautiful so I'm crossing my fingers that it stays that way!

Also, make sure to check out the sales this weekend as to not miss the great deals. Liz Schneider has a great list of the sales on her blog Sequins & Stripes. I'll definitely be searching the J.Crew sales!

Have a great holiday and weekend!

Happy Independence Day!

{Joie blazer, Gap skirt, Ralph Lauren Sandals, Timex watch}

Yay for long holiday weekends! I'm so excited for this weekend since it means the Fourth of July, a fun day with extended family on the Cape, and finally picking up my puppy on Monday!

These are pictures were snapped last weekend when my sister and I ran out for some ice cream. I don't wear this blazer all the time, but every time I do put it on I feel extra special. While Joie items are pretty much always out of my price range I love searching Tj Maxx, Marshalls, and Nordstrom Rack for deals! Nordstrom Rack online is having an incredible Joie event right now that only goes until Saturday (and is selling out quickly!). I love these pants, this skirt, and this striped shirt!

Also, since I'm signing off early this week I thought I would share some of favorites from the week! This interview with Amy Stone on the Style Line is absolute perfection and also spotlights a few adorable NYC spots! These drawings about the different stereotypes that are put on women is one of the most inspiring and empowering pieces I've seen in a while. Even though I have no spaces to decorate for myself I'm obsessed with this post from Domaine about decorating like an it girl

I hope you all have an incredible Fourth of July weekend! I think sadly it is supposed to rain where I am for the holiday, but I plan on spending as much time as possible in the sun!

For college (and high school) students summertime means a completely different schedule. Whether it’s switching to a 5 day a week early morning internship or a late night summer job it’s definitely different than the months of school and studying. I’ve mentioned it a little bit in my posts recently, but my schedule this summer is all over the place. Between babysitting a few days a week right now, my job at an ice cream store, and a couple different projects a week for my internship my schedule changes everyday. This weird schedule has really been messing with my sleep and my mornings even though I’ve really always been a morning person. I mean I don’t know anyone who likes to get up at 5 in the morning (including myself), but I am someone who gets the most work done in the morning. During school I was waking up at 5:30 so that I had time to get ready, eat breakfast, and catch up on news and my favorite blogs. I had a consistent schedule which made it really easy to follow a morning routine, but when I got home all of this fell apart. However, after reading this post by Carly on The College Prepster a couple of weeks ago I was inspired to really take back my mornings.

Some mornings I’m working at 8, some at 10, and sometimes I don’t even start work until 4 in the afternoon if I’m working at night. With this weird schedule I was waking up at all different times and almost always tired. Recently I switched back to getting up at a consistent time (with a little flux) and early enough to have time for my relaxed mornings I love so much. After waking up (only one snooze!) and showering I spend a half hour or so eating breakfast, watching the news, and scrolling through Bloglovin. Then I finish getting dressed and ready for the day (including cleaning up any giant messes created the day before) and give myself ten minutes to schedule blog and social media posts so that I’m not worrying about it throughout the day. Finally I either head to work or find the best spot to work on projects that are on my to-do lists (and I’ll have a post about those lists soon!).

Just as Carly said I’ve been feeling so much better since I’ve gotten back on schedule and my days are more productive when I’m working on my own projects. What do you all do to stay on track in the morning?
